"温故知新- Forming New Art from Classics"

In this exhibition, Karasumaru will mainly feature her new series titled "Revisiting the Past - Learning from the Past," which has evolved from the previous "Shin Design + Plus Series." It consists of 23 two-dimensional works. The new series focuses on traditional Japanese art from the Edo period and combines the essence of European medieval art , the roots of painting. Throughout her experience living in Italy, Karasumaru has transcended the boundaries between the East and the West, and within herself, she has merged and purified various elements gathered while examining history with a balanced, unique, and delicate sensibility. These elements manifest in new and pop forms.
In some works with the gold background, the masterpieces of major artists from the medieval Europe are presented, such as Botticelli, Piero della Francesca, da Messina, Dürer, van Eyck, Bosch, and Memling splendidly fused with the beauty of Japan, which seems to create a mysterious world. Delicate drawings and unique coloring techniques establish a new world where these two distinct forms of Eastern and Western paintings harmoniously coexist within the tableau. Additionally, Karasumaru ambitiously created works by drawing on washi (Japanese paper) for the first time and coloring them with acrylic paint.
この度KATSUYA SUSUKI GALLERYでは2023年7月7日(金)より、2年ぶり2回目となる烏丸由美の個展、「温故知新－Forming new art from classics」を開催いたします。
本展では、前回発表した「シン・デザイン＋プラスシリーズ」からさらに進化させた、新たなシリーズ、「温故知新－ Learning from the past」を中心に平面作品23点で構成されます。この新シリーズは、江戸時代の日本美術に注目し、そこに絵画のルーツとなるヨーロッパの中世美術のエッセンスを加えたものであり、それは烏丸が長年のイタリア生活の中で、東洋と西洋の枠組みを取り払い、自身の中で融合され浄化されたバランスの取れた個性的で繊細な感性で、歴史を見つめながら現代に生きる中でひろい上げた様々なエレメントが、ポップで新しい形となって表われていきます。
今回、金色を背景とした作品ではボッティチェリ、ピエロ・デッラ・フランチェスカ、ダ・メッシーナ、デューラー、ファン・エイク、ボッシュ、メムリンクといった中世ヨーロッパの主要な作家たちの作品が見事に、日本の美と融合して不思議な世界をかもし出します。繊細なドローイングと独自のカラーリング。タブローの中でそれらの２つのまったく違った東洋と西洋の絵画が見事に調和して新しい世界を構築していきます。また今回は、初めて和紙にドローイングを施し、アクリル絵の具で彩色した意欲的な作品も作り上げました。
