Since the 1990s, Yumi Karasumaru's research has developed in parallel between painting and performance, with a keen eye on the relationship between the present and the past of her home country, Japan. The title Facing Histories 2023 evokes the artist's desire to tell "black stories and white stories" collected throughout her life.
On Nov. 18, for the finissage, the artist will present the performance “The Storyteller - The Storyteller 2023, The Double Pop Songs for Salerno” in which Japanese theater is embedded with Western culture and way of life. The new performance The Double Pop Songs, is the result of a selection of two Japanese "POP" songs. The songs are denuded by music, and the words are punctuated by projections onto the artist's body dressed in a white kimono that becomes a screen for storytelling.

Fin dagli anni Novanta la ricerca di Yumi Karasumaru si sviluppa parallelamente tra la pittura e la performance, con uno sguardo attento al rapporto tra presente e passato del suo paese d’origine, il Giappone. Il titolo Facing Histories 2023 evoca la volontà dell’artista di raccontare “storie nere e storie bianche” raccolte nel corso della sua vita.
Il 18 novembre, per il finissage, l’artista presenterà la performance The Storyteller – Il Narratore 2023, The Double Pop Songs for Salerno in cui il teatro giapponese si incastra con la cultura e il modo di vivere occidentale. La nuova performance The Double Pop Songs, è frutto di una selezione di due canzoni “POP” giapponesi. Le canzoni vengono denudate dalla musica e le parole sono scandite da proiezioni sul corpo dell’artista vestita di un kimono bianco che si trasforma in schermo per narrare storie.
