Yumi Karasumaru
Facing Histories

  • We are pleased to announce a traveling exhibition of Yumi Karasumaru "Facing Histories'' , starting from July 21 to October in 2015. The exhibition will circulate to 3 venues, Hiroshima, Kyoto and Tokyo, in Japan . This year marks 70th anniversary of the atomic bombings over Hiroshima and Nagasaki and the end of WWⅡ. Yumi will face the catastrophe of the bombings, looking back on Japanese history as well as family and personal histories around the War, which we cannot forget and we must not.

Yumi has been painting "Atomic Series'' since 1995 and she had a solo exhibition of this series in Hiroshima, 1999 for the occasion of the memorial day of the atomic bomb. She started painting "family series" in 90's and "Teenager series" and "Tokyo Landscape series" in 2000, while she looked at Japan from far away. Living Italy allows her to confront herself to the differences in culture and mentality among two countries. Through this she expresses her worry, sorrow and love to her birthplace, Japan.

At these exhibitions Yumi will show more than 100 tableaux and drawings by installations. Then she will perform a reading performance in Kyoto on 6th and 9th of August , the Atomic Bomb Memorial Day. For this occasion, an art book 「Facing Histories Yumi Karasumaru」 is published in July.
