Yumi Karasumaru Exhibition"Tokyo Stories. vol.3": Press Release We are pleased to announce the exhibition of Japanese artist Yumi KARASUMARU "Tokyo Stories.vol.3" starting on January 13th.
This is her first exhibition in France at Olivier Houg Gallerie, Lyon.

Karasumaru is an artist based in Bologna, Italy.
In recent years, she had solo exhibitionat Mizuma Art Gallery, Tokyo, Japan, Fabio Paris Art Gallery, Brescia, Italy, and participated in several group shows including in the United States and Europe.
Her work is based on melancholy and anxiety evoked unconsciously by experiencing the distance to Japan.
Karasumaru clearly sees the reality of Japanese culture, society and daily life, and creates art pieces by confronting and feeling these facts.
Such pieces include: a series of paintings "The Family", "Atomic", and "Teenager" in which she explores Japanese contemporary icons, as well as her new "Tokyo Landscape" series. Her creation process starts from shooting pictures in town.
She then projects the images on canvas and elaborately traces the outlines of shadows and colors.
The various shapes and patterns come along through this delicate process.
As a puzzle, these patterns are to be filled with many colors instinctively picked and mixed by the artist. On top of the painted scene, she draws very closely and lovely with ink.
These different images and various colors overlap and entwine like a spider web, to create bottomless depth in the works. This Exhibition "Tokyo Stories. vol.3" is composed of 40 tableaux from the past 5 years from the "Tokyo Landscape" and "Teenager" series based on the pictures shot each time she returned to Japan. Also a performance artist, Karasumaru presents her new performance video "Story-Teller". She tells the stories about memories and episodes she was told while traveling and enigmatic stories and dreams of her close friends with a brittle and quiet tone of voice as if she is a storyteller in a mountain.
We hope that it will provide a new outlook on the canvases' "stories", creating opportunities to consider them through individual experiences and sensibilities.
