There aren't many strong movements in Yumi Karasumaru's work or performances. They are situated in the time that goes by slowly. Maybe this has nothing to do with the fact that Yumi likes to stay calm. Or maybe that's how she wants to appear, so she can hide the feelings she wants to warmly express inside of her.
Yumi transferred the place where she wanted to live and express herself from Japan to Italy. But maybe she doesn't intend to immerse herself completely inside Italy. It seems to me that she wants to move between West and East. And there is a world of passion, inside her body. The external serenity and the internal vivacity: we also find this dualism in the aesthetic of the Japanese "Noh" theatre. And we find it again in the technique of projecting slides on the human body, in her performance, in which she overlays spaces of serenity and vivacity. Today Yumi holds her personal exhibition in Hiroshima. After the war, Hiroshima astonishingly was born again. But up to now, it is the city that makes us harshly think about war and peace, and about the tragedy of the atomic bomb. One of Yumi's theme is the archetypal scene of the launch of the bomb. Maybe it will be one of the important elements of this exhibition. Yumi is trying, through a long course, also to bring the point of view of the West, of Italy. She doesn't look quickly for a solution, on the contrary, she makes her spirit work deeply. Even this time we find again the dialogue between vivacity and serenity.
静と動／烏丸由美の世界

烏丸由美の作品やパフォーマンスには、激しい動きは少ない。
それらはたいてい、ゆっくり流れる時間の中にある。
しかし、そのことと、由美がじっとしていることが好きかどうか
はまた別のことである。もしかしたら、活発に動き主張する気持ちを、
からだとこころのなかに溜め込んでいる
からこそ、あのようにゆっくりした外観になっているのかもしれないのだ。
由美は日本という東洋からイタリアへと、生活と表現の拠点を移動させた。
しかしイタリアにすっかりなじむことを目ざしているわけではあるまい。
むしろ精神的な意味においても、また実際に旅行するという意味においても、
西洋と東洋の間を激しく盛んに往来することを求めているように、私には思われる。
由美のバックグラウンドには西洋と東洋の間を盛んに往来する批評精神がある。
また由美の体の中には、はげしい情念の世界がある。外見の静と内側の動。
それは日本のお能の世界にも共通する美学である。
そしてそれは由美のパフォーマンスにおける、肉体へのスライド映写という、
静なる時空と動なる時空をオーバーラップさせるテクニックにもつながっている。
今回、由美はヒロシマで展覧会を開催する。
第二次大戦後、ヒロシマは見事に復興した。しかし戦争や平和について、
それからあの原爆の悲劇を、今もなおなまなましく考えさせる都市でもある。
由美がテーマのひとつとしているものに、原爆投下の原風景がある。
たぶん今回の展覧会にも、このテーマは重要な要素として組み込まれるだろう。
しかしそれを由美は、いったんイタリアという西洋の眼差しを経由させるという、
あえて遠回りな方法によって実現させようとしている。
性急に答えを求めない。だが深いところでは活発な精神の動きがある。
この静と動の対話が、今回も見られるに違いない。
"Vivacità e serenità" Il mondo di Yumi Karasumaru

Non ci sono tanti movimenti forti nelle opere o nelle performance di Yumi Karasumaru. Sono situate nel tempo che passa lentamente. Questo forse non c'entra con il fatto che a Yumi stessa piaccia starsene tranquilla. Oppure ouò darsi che voglia apparire cos'è per nascondere dentro di sè i sentimenti che vuole esprimere.
Yumi ha trasferito il luogo in cui vivere e esprimersi dal Giappone all'Italia. Ma forse non intende immergersi completamente nell'Italia. Mi pare che voglia piuttosto spostarsi tra Occidente e Oriente, non soltanto nel senso fisico del "viaggiare", ma anche nel senso spirituale. C'è sullo sfondo uno spirito critico che si sposta spesso tra l'Occidente e l'Oriente. E c'è un altro mondo di passione, dentro il suo corpo. La serenità esterna e la vivacità interna: troviamo questo dualismo anche nell'estetica del teatro "Noh" giapponese. E lo ritroviamo nella tecnica di proiettare diapositive sul corpo umano, nella sua performance, in cui si sovrappongono spazi di serentità e vivacità. Oggi Yumi espone la sua mostra personale a Hiroshima. Dopo la guerra,
Hiroshima è sorprendentemente rinata. Ma ancora adesso, è la città che ci fa crudamente pensare alla guerra e alla pace, e alla tragedia della bomba atomica. Uno dei temi di Yumi è la scena archetipa del lancio della bomba. Forse sarà uno degli elementi importanti in questa mostra. Yumi sta cercando, attraverso un lungo percorso, di portare anche il punto di vista dell'occidente, dell'Italia. Non cerca subito una soluzione, anzi, fa lavorare lo spirito nel profondo. Ritroviamo anche questa volta quel dialogo tra la vivacità e la serenità.
